Is there a leash law in Currituck County?
Yes, there is a leash law; however, it’s only enforced for dogs.
Currituck County Code of Ordinance sec. 3-201, Currituck Dog Restraint Ordinance: Within the County of Currituck, no owner or keeper of any dog shall permit such dog to run at large. Hunting dogs shall be excluded from the provisions requiring physical restraint while the dogs are engaged in hunting or training provided that the hunting complies with North Carolina law. This ordinance shall apply countywide.

Is there a leash law for cats?
No, there is not a leash law for cats; however, cats are not allowed to create a nuisance.
Currituck County Code of Ordinance sec. 3-67, Animals Creating Nuisance Prohibited: It shall be unlawful for an owner or keeper to permit an animal or animals to create a nuisance or to maintain a nuisance created by an animal or animals. For what constitutes a nuisance, refer to Currituck County Code of Ordinance sec. 3-62 Definitions.

Is it alright to feed stray animals?
No. Feeding stray animals is not permitted.
Currituck County Code of Ordinance sec. 3-87 Keeping Stray Animals: It shall be unlawful for any person in the County to knowingly and intentionally to harbor, feed, or keep in possession by confinement, or otherwise allow to remain on his property any animal which does not belong to him.

If your animal is missing, or if you think Animal Control might have picked up your animal, you should contact the Currituck County Animal Services & Control:

Does Currituck County require dog owners to purchase a license?
No. Dog licenses are not required; however, dogs are required to wear their rabies tags at all times.
Currituck County Code of Ordinance sec. 3-71, Vaccination Tag and Certificate: It shall be unlawful for any dog owner or keeper to fail to provide their dog with a collar or harness to which a current rabies tag issued under this section is securely attached. The collar or harness, with attached tag, must be worn at all times. Cats shall not be required to wear a collar or harness with attached tags.

At this time, there is no set number or limit of animals per household.

How much is the quarantine fee for dogs and cats?
Quarantine fees for dogs and cats are $100.00 for the ten-day quarantine or $10.00 a day. This applies to bites only.
