Unified Development Ordinance (UDO)

The purpose of the Unified Development Ordinance (PDF) is to protect the

  • public health
  • safety
  • and general welfare

of the citizens and landowners of Currituck County; and to implement the policies and objectives of county-adopted plans addressing the county’s growth and development.

Currituck County current Unified Development Ordinance was last amended on July 18, 2025.

PB 25-15 Currituck County:
Request to amend the Unified Development Ordinance, Chapter 2. Administration and Chapter 10. Definitions and Measurement, to remove the special use permit requirement for type I preliminary plats (subdivisions creating 20 or fewer lots) when one or more public facilities are at 85% or more of maximum capacity, and clarify definitions related to preliminary plats.

Administrative Manual

The administrative manual (PDF) is intended to assist in the administration of the Unified Development Ordinance.  The manual consolidates information in the development review process and helps applicants understand the procedures and requirements.  In an effort to ease the review process, the manual also includes:

  • application forms,
  • review checklists,
  • and submittal and fee schedules.
Stormwater Manual

The stormwater manual (PDF) is intended to provide guidance in appropriate BMP selection, design criteria to meet stormwater regulations, and proper BMP maintenance.  The manual also includes:

  • required forms,
  • submittal checklists for stormwater plans,
  • and guidance for determining runoff rates.

Candidate filing to begin December 1

The Currituck County Board of Elections announced that candidate filing for the March 2026 Primary Election will begin on December 1, 2025, at 12:00 pm. The candidate filing period will close on December 19, 2025, at 12:00 pm.

Local offices scheduled to be contested on the March 2026 Primary Election ballot include the following. Candidates for these contests must file at the Currituck County Board of Elections office:

  • Board of Commissioners – At Large
  • Board of Commissioners – District 3
  • Board of Commissioners – District 5
  • Clerk of Superior Court
  • Sheriff
  • Board of Education – At Large
  • Board of Education – Crawford Township
  • Board of Education – Poplar Branch Township

Local candidates who file at the Currituck County Board of Elections office must pay the filing fee when filing a Notice of Candidacy. The fee is payable by cashier’s check, money order, personal check, or campaign check. Candidates should bring an NC driver’s license or photo ID for notarization. The Currituck County Board of Elections has two notaries on staff and Notice of Candidacy forms are available at the office.

Federal contests on the Primary Election ballot will include United States Senate and United States House of Representatives – District 1. State offices up for election will include North Carolina Supreme Court Associate Justice – Seat 1, NC Court of Appeals, NC State Senate – District 1, and NC House of Representatives – District 1. Additional contests will include seats on the NC Superior Court and NC District Court, and the District Attorney for District 1.

Information for candidates is available on the North Carolina State Board of Elections website, which also includes information for voters. Anyone with questions may contact the Currituck County Board of Elections at 252-232-2525.

Public Notice for Bidders for Corolla Village Road Handicap Ramp Extension

The County of Currituck, North Carolina requests bids for the demolition of 30 feet of the existing walkway/ramp and replacement with approximately 50 feet of new walkway/ramp using the 3 concrete decks removed from the existing walkway and new wood materials located at Corolla Village Road Handicap Access, Corolla, North Carolina.

Bids will be received by email to Crystal Owens, Contract Purchasing Agent at bids@currituckcountync.gov until 2:00 p.m. Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Friday, May 26, 2023. Bids received after this deadline will not be accepted. It is the sole responsibility of the Bidder to ensure receipt of its’ bid by the County. Confirmation of receipt by telephone can be made directly to Crystal Owens at 252-232-6000, ext. 4020.

This is an informal bid. Bids will not be opened publicly and read aloud. Award will be made to the lowest responsive, responsible bidder. No bid may be withdrawn after the scheduled closing time for the receipt of bids for a period of 30 days.

until 2:00 pm, Eastern Standard Time (EST) on Thursday, February 2, 2023, and immediately thereafter publicly opened and read for the furnishing of labor, materials and equipment entering into the construction of:

Sound Park Boat Ramp and Boardwalk Repairs

The project consists of the repair of the Sound Park water front boardwalk and boat ramp. The scope of work includes removal and replacement of approximately 2,200 SF (square feet) of elevated timber boardwalk and 1,400 SF of decking and timber stringers for 3 boat launch piers, installation of new bulkhead earth anchors, repair of approximately 350 SF of concrete boat launch ramp and an Additive bid for installation of pile wraps on 130 existing 10” timber piles.

It is the Bidder’s responsibility however, to ensure that its’ bid is received at the bid opening location.

Bids shall be lump sum base bids with unit price allowance and Additive bid based upon the scope of work defined in the Contract Documents, Plans and Specifications. The County has the option to not select the additive bid in the event the budget does not allow it.

Each bid shall be accompanied by a cash deposit, or a certified check drawn on a bank or trust company authorized to do business in North Carolina, payable to the County of Currituck, in an amount equal to five percent (5%) of the total amount of the bid, as a guarantee that a contract will be entered into. In lieu of cash or a certified check, the Bidder may submit a bid bond in the form prescribed in N.C. Gen. Stat. § 143-129.

The Successful Bidder shall be required to furnish a performance bond and a payment bond for one hundred percent (100%) of the contract amount.

No bid may be withdrawn after the scheduled closing time for the receipt of bids for a period of 30 days.
