Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) is a humane and nonlethal method to manage the feral cat population in our communities. The goal is to humanely trap outdoor cats, take them to a clinic for spay/neuter, vaccinate them against rabies, and return healthy cats to their outdoor homes. While at the clinic, they will also be ear-tipped to make them easily identified as already altered & vaccinated.

This is a great initiative to help stabilize the cat population while ensuring the health and well-being of both the cats and local wildlife.

Who will provide Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) services?

Currituck County is partnering with Eastern Shore Animal Hospital in Grandy, North Carolina to provide:

  • Spaying/neutering services
  • Rabies vaccines
  • Vaccinations for Feline Viral Rhinotracheitis, Calicivirus, and Panleukopenia
  • Ear-tipping
  • Post-operative pain medications.

How much do Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) services cost?

Total veterinary cost per feral cat is $125.00:

Currituck County Cost:$100.00
Citizens Cost: $25.00

How to participate in the Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) program?

To participate in the Trap-Neuter-Return program, citizens who provide food, water, and/or shelter for feral cats need to register with Currituck County Animal Services (CCAS) as a feral cat caregiver. Community cat caregivers will collect feral cats in humane traps provided by Animal Services for transport to the veterinarian. After the cats receive veterinary care, caregivers will return the cats to the location where they were originally trapped.

Interested citizens may contact Currituck County Animal Services at 252-453-8682 or visit the Animal Shelter for assistance.
