Cataract Awareness Month

Cataract Awareness Month highlights cataracts as the leading cause of blindness in the U.S., while emphasizing that it is highly treatable with a simple surgery that has a 95% success rate. Cataracts primarily affects people over 40 but can also occur in newborns due to pregnancy complications or maternal infections. Common causes include diabetes, eye disease or injury, genetic factors, smoking, steroid use, and prolonged exposure to heat.

Early cataracts often develops gradually, so symptoms can be subtle at first. Common early signs of cataracts include:

  • Blurry or cloudy vision
Vision may feel foggy or less sharp, even with updated glasses.
  • Difficulty seeing at night
Night driving can become harder due to glare and reduced clarity.
  • Halos around lights
You may notice rings or halos around headlights or lamps.
  • Faded or yellowing colors
Colors can appear dull, less vibrant, or slightly yellow/brown.
  • Frequent changes in prescription
You may need new glasses or contacts more often than usual.
  • Double vision in one eye
Some people experience overlapping or duplicated images.
Why it Matters:

These symptoms can worsen over time, but cataracts are highly treatable. Recognizing changes early and getting regular eye exams is key to maintaining clear vision.
