Adult Services
Adult services provided by Currituck County are for persons who are 18 years of age or older, and are disabled or incapacitated in some way. There are a wide array of services that can be accessed.
Adult Protective Services
This service is intended to provide protection to elderly and/or disabled adults who are unable to protect themselves from being:
- abused
- neglected
- or exploited by a caretaker or themselves
and they have no one else who can provide protection or assistance for them. A Social Worker from the Department of Social Services will evaluate the situation and provide services as needed and accepted by the adult or ordered by a District Court Judge.
If you are concerned that a disabled and/or elderly adult isn’t being cared for properly, please call the Department of Social Services and make an Adult Protective Services referral. Ask for an intake Social Worker. During regular business hours, call 252-232-3083 to make a report with the intake social worker. Afterhours and weekends, call 252-453-3633 to get in touch with the on call social worker.
Please, DO NOT submit a child or adult protective services report by E-mail.
Guardianship
Often, some adults become unable to make knowledgeable decisions for themselves. Guardianship is a court process in which the courts find an adult unable to make decisions and appoint another person or agency to be their “decision-maker”. The Department of Social Services can assist people with the initiation and/or completion of the Guardianship process.
In-Home Services
A contracted service that provides limited assistance to people who are 60 years old or older. In-Home services can be provided, usually two or three hours per week, to adults living at home that need help with light housekeeping, meal preparation, and light shopping.
Adult Placement Services
Assistance provided to aging, blind, or disabled adults in finding suitable licensed substitute homes when they are unable to remain in their own home or when they need to move out of institutional care. Counseling and casework services with the adult and his family are a part of this program.
Transportation Services
Purchase of services to enable Medicaid eligible clients or eligible aged or disabled individuals to attend medical, health related resources
