Fire Hydrant Flushing & Water Discoloration
Fire hydrant flushing is a routine and necessary process that helps maintain water quality, ensure adequate flow and pressure, and remove sediment from water distribution pipes.
How does hydrant flushing work?
Flushing hydrants increases water flow through the system, which helps stir up and remove built-up minerals and deposits inside the pipes.
When does hydrant flushing occur?
Currituck County performs hydrant flushing annually as part of its distribution system maintenance program. Flushing may also occur after water main repairs.
Can I still use water during flushing?
Yes, your water service will not be interrupted. However, you may experience temporary low water pressure while crews are working in your area. If pressure remains low afterward, check your faucet screens for trapped particles.
Is discolored water safe to drink?
Yes. While water may appear discolored during or shortly after flushing, it is safe to drink.
If discoloration occurs:
- Run cold water for a few minutes until it clears
- If needed, wait a short time and repeat
- Avoid washing clothes until water is clear
If laundry becomes stained:
- Do not dry the clothing
- Rewash with detergent and a rust-removing agent
What if discoloration continues?
Discoloration may last for several hours but only affects the appearance of the water—not its safety. There are no health concerns associated with this temporary condition.
If discoloration persists or you have concerns, Currituck County will test your water at no cost. Please contact Southern Outer Banks Water Department, Monday – Friday, 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. at 252-453-2620 or email Cody.edwards@currituckcountync.gov.
