  • What happens when someone who cannot speak English calls 9-1-1?

The Communications Department has the capability of utilizing an interpreter from an outside provider.  The caller can be quickly connected to an interpreter if needed.

  • How can hearing or speech impaired persons be assisted?

There are special keyboards equipped with TTY/TDD capabilities for those with hearing or speech impediments. We also offer TEXT to 9-1-1 services for callers with access to a cellular phone with a data plan.

  • When I dial 9-1-1, does the operator know where I am calling from?

Yes, the caller’s telephone number and address is displayed on a screen for the telecommunicator. This information must ALWAYS be confirmed. To assist in expediting the emergency response, you should know the physical location and directions, if possible. Exception: caller information is not available when the call comes from a cellular phone.

  • Why am I asked so many questions when I call for an ambulance?

Currituck County utilizes the Emergency Medical Dispatching program. This program requires the dispatcher to ask a series of medical questions in order to determine the severity of the medical condition. Based on your answers, the proper level of care and response code are determined.

Most importantly, the dispatcher is able to provide the caller with needed medical instructions such as Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) or other critical pre arrival instructions.  This way, the caller is able to provide pre arrival care until the ambulance crew arrives.

  • Do I have to give my name when I call 9-1-1?

If you wish to remain anonymous, just tell the operator.

  • What should I do if I see a crime occurring?

Call 9-1-1 immediately. Be observant and make mental notes.

    Look for:

    • Are weapons involved?
    • What is the address?
    • Note physical characteristics such as height, weight, and race.
    • Does the suspect have a beard, scars, marks, or tattoos?
    • What type and color of clothing is he or she wearing?
    • How many people are involved?
    • Are they on foot or in a vehicle?
    • What is the vehicle’s make, model, style, color, license plate number?
  • I've received a traffic violation. How do I pay for the ticket?

Contact the office of the Clerk of Superior Court.
