Poll workers are paid election officials who play a vital role in ensuring fair and efficient elections. They staff local polling places, follow established procedures, and help protect every voter’s rights. Serving as a poll worker is not only an important civic duty—it’s also a unique opportunity to learn more about the election process while giving back to your community.

Before Election Day, all poll workers are required to attend mandatory training to prepare for their responsibilities.

What Poll Workers Do

While duties vary by precinct, poll workers are often responsible for:

  • Setting up and preparing the polling location
  • Greeting voters and verifying registrations
  • Issuing ballots
  • Assisting voters with questions about the voting process
  • Ensuring procedures are followed correctly

On Election Day, poll workers are the face of the election office and help ensure the voting experience is smooth, secure, and accessible.

Requirements to Serve

To be eligible as a poll worker in Currituck County, you must:

  • Be a U.S. citizen
  • Be a registered voter residing in the precinct where you wish to serve
  • Be at least 17 years old by Election Day

Student poll workers must:

  • Be in good academic standing at their school (public, private, or home school)
  • Have permission from a parent/guardian and their school principal/director

Mandatory Training: All poll workers must attend training before serving. No exceptions.

Compensation

Currituck County Poll Worker will be compensated in 2026 at the following rates:

Chief Judge
$19.00 per hour plus travel reimbursement at per diem rate
Judge
$17.00 per hour plus travel reimbursement at per diem rate
Election Assistant
$15.00 per hour plus travel reimbursement at per diem rate

Important: On Election Day, Poll workers are required at minimum to work “Poll Open to Poll Close”.
