  • What eligibility requirements must I meet in order to become a registered voter?

    You must meet the following criteria:

    • be a citizen of the United States;
    • be a resident of North Carolina and Currituck County for the 30 days prior to an election;
    • be at least 18 years of age by the next general election;
    • not be registered to vote in any other county or state;
    • if convicted of a felony, have had your citizenship rights restored.
  • How and where can I register to vote?

    You must complete a voter registration application. If mailing in your application, please note there is an identification requirement. You can obtain voter registration form at the following locations:

    • Board of Elections office
    • Public Library
    • Local high school
    • Currituck Chamber of Commerce office

    Forms should be completed and mailed or delivered to the Board of Elections office.

    You may register at the Department of Motor Vehicles office when conducting official DMV business, or at any state agency when applying for or receiving benefits.

    After your application is processed you will receive a voter card which provides your information and polling place.

  • How often do I have to re-register?

    North Carolina provides permanent voter registration; however, voters may be removed from the voter registration records for the following reasons:

    • a felony conviction; moved from the county; death;
    • by request from the voter;
    • or if the voter has not voted in any election within eight (8) consecutive years and had no contact with the Board of Elections.
  • When is the deadline to register to vote?

    If you wish to register to vote, change your party affiliation, or change your name or address, you must do so 25 days prior to the election.

  • How can I vote in the upcoming election if I will be out of the County?

    If you will be out of the area on an election day, you may request an absentee ballot by mail or vote early voting in the election office.

  • I have difficulty walking but would still like to vote at my precinct. How can I vote at the precinct when it is difficult for me to get close to the building’s entrance?

    There are handicapped voting spaces for those who can walk into the building.

    For those who are unable to walk into the building, an official will bring the ballot out to your vehicle for “curbside” voting.

  • What time are the polls open on Election Day?

    Polls open at 6:30 a.m. and close at 7:30 p.m.

  • My near relative has died. How can I have them removed from the voting records?

    A North Carolina Notification of Deceased Voter form must be mailed or delivered to the County Board of Election office in the county in which the deceased voter lived prior to death.
