The Importance of Dune Protection
Currituck County recognizes the importance of dune protection and restoration of oceanfront dunes. As a result, a sand fence reimbursement program is available to property owners.
Cost Share
Grantees are eligible for reimbursement of the cost to purchase and install sand fence. Grantees are required to install sand fence in accordance with Coastal Area Management Act requirements and will be reimbursed at cost not to exceed $500 per 100 feet.
Reimbursement is based on the actual cost of labor and materials; paid receipts must be submitted. Requests for reimbursement that exceed the established maximum may be approved at the discretion of the County Manager or the Planning & Inspections Director.
Eligible Applicants
- Oceanfront Property Owners’ Associations (POA) or Homeowners Associations (HOA)
- Any owner of property with a frontal dune in community where the POA or HOA is not participating in the reimbursement program or where there is no POA or HOA established.
- The frontal dune is deemed to be the first mound of sand located landward of the ocean beach having sufficient vegetation, height, continuity and configuration to offer protection.
