Recently, the Currituck County Board of Commissioners amended the Currituck County Code of Ordinances Section 11-29. The ordinance addresses trash container storage and is intended to reduce the number of intrusions by wildlife.
Animal Proof Enclosures in the 4WD Off-Road Area
- Residential units in the 4WD off-road area that utilize a commercial trash pick-up service must have an animal-proof enclosure to store trash containers. Specifications and examples of enclosures can be found here.
- Any owner or occupant who disposes of their own solid waste at a county solid waste convenience site is not required to have a trash container enclosure.
The County Code of Ordinances also specifies the number of containers required in Corolla and the 4WD off-road area. A summary is provided below:
Number of Containers & Trash Removal in the 4WD Off-Road Area
- Each residential unit must have a minimum of four (4) trash containers.
- Each residential vacation unit must have one trash container for each bedroom, with a minimum of four (4) containers and maximum of ten (10) containers.
- Trash must be removed at least two (2) times each week.
- Residences with 10 or more bedrooms must remove trash at least three (3) times per week.
- Each residential unit must have a minimum of one recycling container.
- Each residential vacation rental unit must have a minimum of one recycling container for every three solid waste containers. Example: A vacation rental unit with six bedrooms must have at least 6 trash containers and 2 recycling containers.
Number of Containers in Corolla
- Each residential unit must have a minimum of four (4) trash containers.
- Each residential vacation unit must have one trash container for each bedroom, with a minimum of four (4) containers and maximum of ten (10) containers.
- Each residential unit must have a minimum of one recycling container.
- Each residential vacation rental unit must have a minimum of one recycling container for every three solid waste containers. Example: A vacation rental unit with six bedrooms must have at least 6 trash containers and 2 recycling containers.
