Rick Godsey, Chief Building Inspector for the Currituck County Department of Planning and Inspections, received a District Inspector of the Year award from the North Carolina Building Inspectors Association (NCBIA).  The award was announced on July 22, 2025, during the NCBIA annual conference in Cherokee, North Carolina.

The District Inspector of the Year award is given to an individual within the association who has distinguished themselves through their dedication and professionalism, standing out as a role model within the organization. This award is NCBIA’s second highest honor and is given to those individuals who over the last year have strived to maintain the highest standards of excellence as an NC Building Code Official.

The NCBIA also recognized Godsey with a 10 Year Service Award. Since 2015, Godsey has served Currituck County with unwavering commitment, technical excellence, and a clear passion for building safety and community education. Recently promoted to Chief Building Inspector, he now leads a dedicated team of seven building inspectors and code enforcement officers, setting a high standard for professionalism and service.

“Richard Godsey exemplifies excellence in public service. From his technical mastery and leadership to his community involvement and innovative outreach, he has made a meaningful and lasting impact on Currituck County,” said Bill Newns, Currituck County Planning and Inspections Director.

Godsey is one of fewer than 200 individuals statewide to hold Level III Inspector certification in all five trade areas, a distinction that reflects his depth of knowledge and commitment to continued education. He has also earned his FAA Drone Pilot License, which will allow him to use drone technology to improve inspections, document storm damage, and enhance site access in challenging or hazardous environments.

He also produced a series of deck safety videos tailored to the region’s vacation rental homes. These videos are a valuable resource for property owners and rental companies that have helped elevate awareness of structural integrity.
