Currituck County Government announced that Melissa Futrell has been selected for the position of Assistant County Manager. She has served as director of the Currituck County Human Resources Department since March 1, 2022, and will begin her new role as Assistant County Manager on April 21, 2025.
As Assistant County Manager, she will be a key member of County Manager Rebecca Gay’s administrative staff.
“I am thrilled to have Melissa join our management team,” Gay said. “Melissa has proven herself to be a tremendous asset since joining the county as Human Resources Director and I know she will thrive in her new role.”
Futrell will support Gay in providing leadership to county departments, advancing the goals and objectives of the Board of Commissioners, developing the county budget, and establishing effective relationships with community stakeholders. Futrell will continue to lead the Human Resources Department until a new director is hired.
“I am honored to serve as Assistant County Manager for Currituck County and look forward to working alongside our County Manager as well as the dedicated team of staff who serve this community. We will continue to uphold Currituck’s rich history while advancing our vision, mission, and strategic plans,” Futrell said. “I am excited for the opportunity to support and contribute to the success of our county.”
Prior to joining the Currituck County staff, Futrell worked for Currituck County Schools from 2008 to 2022. She is a graduate of Currituck County High School and earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and a Master of Business Administration Degree from East Carolina University. She also serves on the advisory boards for the Currituck County Cooperative Extension and the East Carolina Thomas D. Arthur Graduate School of Business.
During her time as Human Resources Director, Futrell improved the department’s technology and operations, creating better online services for job applications and recruitment. Additional accomplishments include overseeing the department’s move into a new building, coordinating an employee salary study, and leading the transition of the county’s employee health insurance provider to the North Carolina Health Insurance Pool with Blue Cross NC.
