Currituck County completed the initial phase of a project to develop new aviation facilities at Currituck County Regional Airport. County officials celebrated the opening of a new 13,500 square foot, 10-unit T-hangar on Thursday, April 16, 2026.
The first phase also included clearing 17 acres for future hangar construction and completing associated infrastructure development and land preparation. In addition, paved taxi lane connections were built to the new T-hangar and to the Elizabeth City State University (ECSU) Aviation Currituck Campus, which is currently under construction. Students in the ECSU Flight School will be able to taxi directly from that facility to the airport’s runway.
This work was made possible through a direct appropriation of approximately $4 million to the Currituck County Regional Airport from the state, with no county match required.
“We are grateful to our elected officials for their support and for providing this opportunity to expand and strengthen the airport,” said William Nelson, Director of the Currituck County Regional Airport.
Future plans for airport expansion include construction of three additional 10-unit T-hangars, twelve (60’ x 60’) box hangars, and a new airport terminal building.
