During its meeting on February 9, 2026, the Currituck County Board of Commissioners honored Debbie Basnight for serving the community for nearly forty years in the Clerk of Superior Court office. The board adopted a resolution that includes highlights of Basnight’s 38-year career and expresses the commissioners’ appreciation for her dedication to Currituck County.
Basnight was hired by the Clerk’s office in 1987 and recently retired in December 2025. She was the Assistant Clerk of Superior Court and served as the Estates Clerk since 2010, assisting many families during times of loss and guiding them through the estate process with knowledge and compassion. In 2022, Basnight was recognized as the first-ever recipient of the North Carolina Clerk of the Year Award.
Basnight has also been honored with the Order of the Long Leaf Pine. This is the North Carolina’s highest civilian honor and is bestowed by the Governor.
