Domestic and international visitors to and within Currituck County spent $573,350,000 in 2023, an increase of 4.3% from 2022. The data comes from an annual study commissioned by VisitNC, a unit of the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina. Currituck also ranks 14 out of 100 NC counties in visitor total spending.
Rebecca Gay, Currituck County Interim Manager, states, “The growth in economic impact for 2023 showcases that Currituck County continues to draw visitors with its pristine beaches and family-friendly attractions. Visitors to Corolla, the off-road area and the mainland continue to support a tourism economy that allows our residents to enjoy an exceptional quality of life, supports our businesses, and creates jobs.”
Tourism impact highlights for 2023:
- The travel and tourism industry directly employs more than 2502 in Currituck County.
- Total payroll generated by the tourism industry in Currituck County was $115,100,000.
- State tax revenue generated in Currituck totaled $16,400,000 through state sales and excise taxes, and taxes on personal and corporate income.
- Local tax revenue generated in Currituck totaled $21,800,000 from occupancy, sales and property tax revenue from travel-generated and travel-supported businesses.

Statewide, visitor spending in 2023 rose 6.9 percent to reach a record $35.6 billion. Direct tourism employment increased 4.8 percent to 227,224.
