Historic Preservation Commission
Currituck County recognizes the value of its historic heritage and has established a Historic Preservation Commission in order to safeguard county heritage by preserving local landmarks.
The Historic Preservation Commission maintains an inventory of properties of historical significance that are eligible to apply for local landmark designation.
A local historic landmark is a property so designated by the Board of Commissioners as one of special significance due to its:
- Architectural,
- Archaeological,
- Historical,
- Prehistorical,
- and/or cultural importance.
The property must possess integrity in terms of design, setting, workmanship, materials, feeling, and association.
Property owners can apply to have their property designated as a local historic landmark. The first step is to determine if the property is included in the inventory.
