Do you want to learn more about horses? Would you like to compete in a horse competition and not have to own a horse? If so, this is the program for you.

The 4-H Equine Science program consists of:

  • classes,
  • workshops,
  • and field trips

for kids ages 8 to18 who want to learn more about horses.

You will gain experience and knowledge for:

  • judging,
  • participate in horse bowl contests,
  • and explore career opportunities in the horse industry.

These interactive educational sessions will provide participants the opportunity to gain valuable knowledge and skills on many aspects of the horse industry. We will explore the horse from the inside out and learn about the industry itself with particular emphasis on career opportunities.

These classes will also highlight and help prepare youth for the upcoming horse bowl and horse judging competitions that will be held early in 2023. Horse Bowl is a competition to test your knowledge of horses in a quiz bowl format. Horse Judging will teach youth how to become a horse show judge and what judges look for in the show ring.

Each class will have an educational piece on horses and then we will break into teams for practice. The program will consist of:

  • educational classes,
  • hands-on activities,
  • guest speakers such as vets and farriers,
  • and field trips to equine facilities in the area.

The 5 sessions in this series are:

  • October 14, 2022 | Horse Bowl
  • November 4, 2022 | Horse Judging
  • November 18, 2022 | Horse Bowl
  • December 2, 2022 | Horse Bowl
  • December 16, 2022| Horse Bowl

All classes are from 2:00 – 4:30 p.m. and will be held at the Currituck County Extension Building.
