Volunteer Fire Departments
Volunteer fire departments are vital to Currituck County for fire protection. They provide immeasurable benefits, which is critical in a rural community such as ours. The services that volunteers provide save the community money by relying on unpaid volunteer time. The expense of an alternative, county-wide paid fire service would be passed along to citizens as a property tax increase.
Each volunteer fire department responds to emergency calls within their respective districts. Currituck County contracts with and provides funding to each volunteer fire department for operational and capital expenses. Currituck County Fire-EMS provides county-wide emergency medical services and maintains a paid fire service staff in Corolla and Knotts Island. The paid service is funded through additional fire service district tax paid by the residents of Knotts Island and Corolla.

Volunteers provide services in their spare time. Roles for volunteers include firefighting, emergency response, scene support, community outreach, fundraising, and administrative duties. There are many different ways in which a volunteer can serve the community. A robust volunteer force helps keep Currituck County’s tax rate steady and provides many personal benefits such as being part of a team, learning new skills, making new friends, and being a positive contributor to our community.
