The Importance of Dune Vegetation
Currituck County recognizes the importance of dune vegetation and dune nourishment. Oceanfront property owners are eligible for reimbursement of the cost to purchase, install and fertilize American Beach Grass plants through participation in the Dune Vegetation Reimbursement Program.
Cost Share
Grantees are eligible for reimbursement of the cost to purchase, install and fertilize American Beach Grass plants (beach grass). Grantees may plant and fertilize up to 10 beach grass plants per linear foot of oceanfront property and will be reimbursed at cost not to exceed $400 per 100 feet.
Requests for reimbursement that exceed the established maximum may be approved at the discretion of the County Manager or the Planning & Inspections Director.
Eligible Applicants
- Oceanfront Property Owners’ Associations (POA) or Homeowners Associations (HOA)
- Any owner of property with a frontal dune in community where the POA or HOA is not participating in the reimbursement program or where there is no POA or HOA established.
- The frontal dune is deemed to be the first mound of sand located landward of the ocean beach having sufficient vegetation, height, continuity and configuration to offer protection.
Applications
Eligible applicants shall submit an online application and uploaded paid receipts.
Procedures
Applicants will be required to complete and submit a grant agreement and W9.
Grantees are responsible for the entire process including arranging beach grass purchase & installation through independent contractors.
Plants shall be installed by April 15 of each year.
County staff will perform a site inspection prior to reimbursement.
