The Currituck County Board of Commissioners recognized former North Carolina State Senator Bobby Hanig during their October 5, 2026 meeting, honoring his years of dedicated public service to the citizens of Currituck County and northeastern North Carolina.

Chairman S. Paul O’Neal presented Hanig with a plaque commemorating the Board’s appreciation for his service. The Board also unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing and honoring Hanig’s public service.

Hanig’s public service includes terms on the Currituck County Board of Commissioners, the North Carolina House of Representatives, and the North Carolina Senate. During his time in the General Assembly, Hanig consistently advocated for issues affecting Currituck County and worked to secure state resources for critical local priorities.

Among the accomplishments highlighted in the resolution were $16 million in state funding for Currituck County water and wastewater projects and $4 million for the Currituck County Regional Airport secured during consideration of the 2023 state budget. During consideration of the 2026 state budget, Hanig also advocated for and secured $400,000 for the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office for vehicles and equipment.

The resolution also recognized Hanig’s legislative efforts on issues important to Currituck County, including transportation, economic development, coastal management, commercial fishing, tourism, infrastructure, and local government authority.

Hanig was a strong supporter of the Mid-Currituck Bridge and advocated on behalf of communities served by North Carolina’s ferry system, including opposing the imposition of ferry tolls. He also worked on legislation addressing Currituck County’s authority related to oceanfront easements and beach nourishment, occupancy tax revenue, local land-use authority, and coastal development regulations.

Additionally, Hanig played a role in bringing state and federal regulatory agencies together regarding the Whalehead Club Channel dredging permit, advocated for reform of North Carolina’s economic development tier system, and supported the interests of Currituck County’s commercial fishing community.

The resolution adopted by the Board states that Hanig’s efforts reflect a longstanding focus on the unique needs of Currituck County and recognizes the importance of effective representation through advocacy, collaboration with state and local officials, and pursuit of resources and legislative solutions for the community.

The Board’s resolution will be entered into the official records of Currituck County, with a copy presented to Hanig as a lasting expression of the County’s appreciation for his years of public service.
