Residents in Currituck County may dispose of live Christmas trees at any of the county’s solid waste and recycling convenience centers. Trees may be placed in the brush container. All decorations and tinsel must be removed from the tree before disposal.

Property owners in Corolla may place live, undecorated Christmas trees on the dune as a substitute for traditional sand fencing to trap blowing sand and help prevent dune erosion. Guidelines include the following:

  • Christmas trees may be placed no closer to the ocean than the base of the closest dune to the waterline.
  • Trees should not block public access to the beach, recreational use of the beach, emergency vehicle access, or be placed on private property without permission.
  • Trees should be placed at an angle no less than 45 degrees to the shoreline.
  • Trees should be spaced apart at a minimum of seven (7) feet.
  • If sand fencing is present, a seven-foot separation between trees and fence sections must be maintained.
  • Trees should not be placed at the seaward base of unvegetated beach berms, starter dunes, or on the open beach.
  • Trees should not block the motor vehicle driving lanes on the 4WD beach.
