Currituck County encourages everyone to stay prepared during hurricane season, which continues until November 30. Current storm activity in the Atlantic Ocean is a timely reminder that all residents, property owners, and businesses should have emergency safety plans and stocked emergency safety kits ready to go.
The Emergency Management Department recommends that all citizens Make a Kit & Have a Plan. Staff can also provide local information and hurricane preparedness tips for citizens. Contact the Emergency Management staff at 252-232-2115.
Citizens may sign up for Currituck Alert, the county’s mass notification system, to receive timely messages during critical incidents such as hurricanes. Sign up online or text CTUCKALERT to 888-777.
Remain informed by monitoring trusted sources of weather information, such as the National Weather Service and the National Hurricane Center.
Additional safety reminders:
- Develop an evacuation plan, with preferred destinations and routes.
- Communicate plans with family members and friends.
- Make a checklist of action steps to secure your home and property.
- Document possessions with videos or photographs prior to a storm.
- Store important documents in a waterproof container.
- Have a plan for pets and farm animals. Remember that if you evacuate, take your house pets with you.
- Currituck County does not have pre-storm shelters. If you might need evacuation assistance to an inland shelter, contact Emergency Management at 252-232-2115.
