2026 Primary Candidate Filing Information (PDF)
All candidates are required to open a candidate committee. A candidate committee is required to register within 10 days of:
- Receiving money or anything of value in support of the campaign; or
- Spending money in support of the campaign; or
- Giving consent for anyone else to receive money or spend money for the purpose of bringing about that individual’s nomination or election for office; or
- Filing a notice of candidacy.

The Notice of Candidacy form will be completed at the office. Candidates do not need to bring this form with them to file. If you will not be filing in person, please email: [email protected]
What are the qualifications?
- Must be a registered voter of the county.
- Must be at least 21 years old on Election Day (NC Senate: 25 years old).
- Sheriff: must submit a disclosure statement prepared by the NC Sheriff’s Education and Training Standards Commission. The statement is valid for 90 days after issuance and must be submitted at the time of filing for office.
- NC Senate: must be an NC resident for 2 years by November 3, 2026, within the district for 1 year by November 3, 2026.
- NC House: must be a resident within the district for 1 year by November 3, 2026.
- Must be registered with a NC recognized political party for at least 90 days at the time of filing your Notice of Candidacy (for partisan contests).
- Currituck County Commissioners and School Board: must be a resident within the district you are seeking office in.
What do I need to bring?
- A valid North Carolina driver license or photo ID for notarization.
- Payment method for filing fee (check or money order); filing fees under $50 may be made in cash.
- Any completed campaign finance documents: www.ncsbe.gov/campaign-finance

All Board of Elections meetings scheduled will be held on the second Tuesday’s of each month at the Board of Election’s Office at 10:00 a.m. Any other business transacted by the Board will be done at this time.
