A coastal storm (Nor’easter) is forecast to impact the area from Saturday through Monday. Confidence continues to increase that Currituck County will receive gusty winds, potentially heavy rain, coastal flooding, and beach erosion through the weekend. Here’s what to expect based on the latest update from the National Weather Service in Wakefield:

Tides & Coastal Flooding: There is a period of king tides through October 12, which will make flooding impacts worse than usual.

  • Saturday: Low tides (4:48AM & 5:59PM) | High tide (11:20AM & 11:46PM)
  • Sunday: Low tides (5:49 AM & 7:04 PM) | High tide (12:18 PM)
  • Monday: Low tides (6:45 AM & 8:15 PM) | High tides (12:47 AM & 1:24 PM)

Moderate to major tidal flooding is possible, especially around each high tide. Expect dune erosion and over wash in vulnerable areas. The 4WD beach area will likely be impassable approximately two hours before and after high tides on Sunday and Monday and could remain cut off for extended periods depending on surf and wind conditions.

Winds: Winds begin to increase Saturday late morning, peaking late Sunday into Monday. Sustained winds around 30–38 mph, with gusts up to 55 mph along the coast. Winds will be slightly lower inland but still gusty.

Rainfall: The heaviest rain is expected Saturday night into early Sunday, with 2-4 inches forecasted, and locally higher totals possible near the coast. Rain may overlap with high tides, which could increase flooding concerns in low lying areas.

Beach & Marine Conditions:  Dangerous surf and rip currents are expected through the weekend. Seas could build to 12-16 feet offshore by Sunday night, and significant dune erosion is expected.

Stay Weather Aware: This system is still developing, and some uncertainty remains in the exact track and timing. These winds could cause isolated power outages, scattered debris, and hazardous driving conditions. We’ll continue to post updates as new information becomes available.
