Visitors to the Northern Outer Banks are reminded to help protect our local environment by placing all trash in appropriate containers and securing lids. “Trash Your Trash” is one of six principles endorsed by Currituck County Travel and Tourism, Visit NC, North Carolina Recreation Industry and Leave No Trace to preserve the natural beauty of coastal North Carolina.

Visitors in the off-road 4WD area should always place trash in cans with secure lids and put all containers in the animal-proof enclosure provided at rental homes. Doing so provides many benefits, including keeping the beach and 4WD neighborhoods clean and beautiful. These actions also prevent the Corolla Wild Horses from eating trash items that might make them sick and help keep other wild animals from scavenging near homes and people.

“Trash Your Trash” is included in the Make It Your Nature to Protect the Coast of North Carolina’s Outdoor Spaces campaign. Other environmental initiatives include Plan Ahead and Prepare; Stick to the Trails; Leave It as You Find It; Be Considerate of Others and Share the Outdoors; and Keep Wildlife Wild.
