Imelda has grown into a hurricane and is predicted to move out towards sea today. It is not predicted to make landfall on the east coast but Currituck County is expected to receive some impacts from the storm this week. These include:

  • A Gale Watch is in effect for the Currituck Sound through Wednesday evening.
  • A High Surf Advisory is in effect on Tuesday. There is a strong risk of rip currents and dangerous surf zone conditions.
  • Double Red Flags have been posted on the beach. No water entry is permitted.
  • Long duration of northeast winds are expected, with gusts up to 40 knots, beginning Tuesday evening and continuing until Thursday morning, then decreasing slowly.
  • Wednesday through Friday, minor tidal flooding is expected with one foot of inundation possible in vulnerable areas.
  • Minor rainfall accumulation is expected.

Motorists on the off-road beach in Corolla should exercise caution during the high tide, when the 4WD beach road will likely become impassable. High tide times include:

  • September 29 – 12:33 am and 1:05 pm
  • September 30 – 1:27 am and 2:05 pm
  • October 1 – 2:36 am and 3:12 pm
  • October 2 – 3:45 am and 4:10 pm
  • October 3 – 4:41 am and 5:02 pm

The Wednesday afternoon high tide at 3:12 pm is expected to be the most significant of the week.
