New for 2025, Corolla Beach Rescue has added a Double Red Flags warning to its system of notifying beachgoers of ocean and surf-related hazards. This new designation is endorsed by the United States Lifesaving Association and has been adopted into the Currituck County Code of Ordinances by the Board of Commissioners.

The updated beach flag warning system consists of the following:

  • Double Red Flags:  The water is closed for public use.
  • Single Red Flag:  High hazard, with strong surf and currents present. Swimmers are discouraged from water entry.
  • Yellow Flag:  Medium hazard, with moderate surf or currents present.

Beachgoers are advised to swim near lifeguard stands. Along with warning flags, lifeguard stands also have message boards that are updated daily with information on ocean conditions and any risks that are present. Anyone with questions should speak with a lifeguard prior to swimming.
