The wild Spanish Mustangs are an integral part of the history and tradition of the Currituck Outer Banks and are both culturally and economically significant to the County.

Currituck County welcomes outdoor tour operators but has set rules and regulations in place to protect and enhance the public use of the beach and the county’s natural resources and to preserve the livability and attractiveness of northern Currituck Outer Banks communities.

2019 County Issue License Tag. Effective May 22, 2019

• Tour vehicles are required to display a valid North Carolina license tag.
• Each tour vehicle is required to display the name of the tour company and the yearly County-issued identification.
• Operation of tours west of the dune line in the four-wheel drive area of the beach is prohibited prior to 8:00 a.m. and after 8:00 p.m.
• The use of amplified sound is prohibited west of the dune line in the four-wheel drive area of the beach at all times.
• All traffic laws and county ordinances apply to outdoor tour operators, outdoor tour vehicles and outdoor tour drivers.
• Tour vehicles should stay 50 feet from the wild horses.
• Any driving infraction or outdoor tour operator license violation will result in a citation issued to the offending party. The actions of tour drivers impact the tour company.Multiple citations will result in suspension of the outdoor tour operator license.
