The Currituck County Board of Commissioners extended a leave of absence for Commissioner J. Owen Etheridge during its December 1, 2025 meeting. Commissioner Etheridge, who represents District 5, has been on a leave of absence due to health reasons since October 6, 2025. The leave of absence is now effective until March 1, 2026.
Commissioner Etheridge’s original leave of absence was set to expire on January 1, 2026, but he requested the extension as he continues his recovery. Troy Breathwaite will continue to fill the District 5 seat while Etheridge is absent. Breathwaite was appointed as a temporary replacement by the Board on November 3, 2025.
