Currituck County has begun the process of filling a newly created position to lead the county’s opioid overdose prevention program. Applications are being accepted for Opioid Program Coordinator, who will be a full-time employee reporting to the County Manager.

Currituck County seeks a candidate who possesses experience relative to the opioid epidemic or substance abuse prevention and treatment. The position has a beginning salary of $54,510.86. A job description and online application is available here.

Filling this position is an initial strategy of the Opioid Advisory Board to combat opioid use and addiction in Currituck County. Additional strategies to be implemented include appointing a peer support specialist to aid citizens experiencing mental health and/or substance abuse challenges; forming a post-overdose response team to collaborate with Currituck County Fire-Emergency Medical Services; and distributing Naxolone (also known as Narcan) to programs that utilize the overdose-reversal drug.

Meetings of the Opioid Advisory Board are open to the public. The next meeting is scheduled for February 13, 2025, at 9:00 am in the Historic Courthouse conference room, 153 Courthouse Rd, Currituck, NC, 27929.

The seven-member Opioid Advisory Board consists of:  Denise Khouri (Chair), Outer Banks Boil Company and Our EPIC Project; DJ Kophazy (Vice Chair), Currituck Family YMCA Executive Director; Kaylee Bynum, Peaceful Waters Counseling; Alison Sholar, Currituck County Schools PASS Coordinator; Dr. Barbara Courtney; Lt. Jesse Taylor, Currituck County Sheriff’s Office; and Karen Tejano, MS, LCMHC, LCAS, Holland and Associates Counseling, PLLC.
