Military veterans living in Currituck County and Camden County now have access to a full-time local government employee who can connect them with beneficial resources and services.
Robert Cain began on October 9, 2024, as the Veteran Services Officer for Currituck and Camden counties.
“This position is an exciting new chapter in the lives of both Camden and Currituck County’s veterans. This partnership will help to ensure that our veterans get the physical, mental, and financial benefits that they have earned,” said Selina Jarvis, Currituck County Commissioner. “The guidance that a Veteran Services Officer provides brings benefits not only to the veteran and their family, but to the community at-large. This partnership between Camden and Currituck Counties is an excellent example of how collaboration can bring prosperity to our citizens by sharing the costs.”
Cain’s role will be to identify appropriate benefits and resources for military veterans and their dependents, such as pensions, compensations, medical services, rehabilitation training, education and home loans, and death benefits. He will help veterans with completing necessary applications and assist with resolving issues by contacting national, state, and regional agencies on behalf of local veterans. Cain will also coordinate with county departments, such as Social Services, to ensure veterans are receiving local services available to them.
“Camden County sits in a unique area, with more and more armed service members choosing to retire here. By having a Veteran Services Officer on staff, Camden County can now assist all our armed service members in receiving the VA benefits that they earned,” said Ross Munro, Camden County Commissioner.
Cain is a veteran of the United States Coast Guard. He served for more than 20 years and was promoted to the highest enlisted rank in the military. He has a Bachelor of Science degree in Aviation Maintenance Technology from Thomas Edison State University. Most recently, he was employed since 2019 as Training and Development Manager for the USCG Aviation Technical Training Center in Elizabeth City, NC.
Cain will have office space in each county where he can meet with citizens. In Currituck, the office is located in the Historic Courthouse. In Camden, his office is in the Camden County Library. The Board of Commissioners in Currituck and Camden approved an interlocal agreement to share this newly created position. Each county will share the costs of salary and benefits equally.
