Sheriff’s Citizens Academy
The Citizens Academy is designed to expose interested participants to the day to day law enforcement work of the Currituck County Sheriff’s Office and the Criminal Justice System in general. Applicants must be:
- at least 18 years old
- Currituck County resident
- in good health
- have no criminal record
All information furnished will be considered confidential.
During the eight (8) week program, citizens from the county will:
Tour
- Sheriff’s Office
- Detention Center
- Courthouse
Learn About
- Uniform Patrol division
- Jail
- Narcotics Unit
- Criminal Investigative Division
- SWAT
- Volunteering
- Community Programs
- Bailiffs and Court procedures
In each class, the participants will have hands on training with various equipment to include:
- night vision
- forward looking infrared devices
- robots
- digital child ID program
- crime scene processing
- mock use of force incidents
- courtroom procedures
- laser radar
- K-9 demonstrations
- searches
How to Register for the Citizens Academy
Classes are held on Thursday evenings for eight (8) consecutive weeks. Space will be limited to the first 15 applicants who are accepted into the Academy. Applicants will be notified when classes will be held.
