Daily Happenings
The Currituck County Senior Centers; Barco, Knotts Island and Powell’s Point are places designed to give Senior Adults in Currituck the opportunity to meet other seniors, receive services geared towards seniors and participate in activities that will affirm their dignity and self-worth.
With that in mind each month the staff produces a newsletter to inform citizens of available programs for that month. Please take the time to read what the Senior Centers are doing this month.
When we all work together the senior centers are an “enjoyable and a happy place” for EVERYONE!

North Carolina For All Statewide Day of Service | Friday, March 3, 2023
NC For All Statewide Day of Service from 11:00 a.m. -7:00 p.m.. NC lawyers will be available to take calls from the public. This FREE service allows people to call in and get their basic legal questions answered. Greenville/Eastern NC area: 252-969-0606.
Mexican Train Dominoes
We are currently creating an “interest list” for seniors that would like to participate in a weekly scheduled game of this fun version of dominoes.
What is Mexican Train Dominoes? The object of the game is for a player to play all the tiles from his or her hand onto one or more chains, or trains, emanating from a central hub or “station”.

Programming Update at Currituck Senior Center in Barco
- Bingo will be played on Monday’s and Thursday’s at 11:00 a.m. starting in March!
- Pickleball will go to 5 days a week on Wednesday, March 1, 2023!
Free AARP Tax Prep…
It is that time of year again, tax time. Beginning Thursday, February 2 – Thursday, April 6, 2023 this year’s free AARP Tax Preparation will be held by appointment ONLY. NO Walk Ins will be accepted.

Free AARP tax preparation is open to the public regardless of age and is geared towards low-to moderate income taxpayers. Certain filing restrictions apply.

Help Needed…
Home Delivered Meals Volunteers!
A Home Delivered Meals Volunteer is the ONLY reason we are able to serve our Currituck County home bound seniors with meals throughout the week.
Volunteers play a key role in providing seniors not only with a meal, but offer much needed socialization and smiles! You may be the ONLY person that they see all day! Volunteer schedules are flexible to meet our volunteers’ needs. The average route requires 1 hour of your time and you can volunteer as little or as often as you want.
There are currently 10 routes throughout Currituck County serving approximately 65 Home Bound Seniors.

Corolla…
Corolla Yoga is taking place at the Corolla Library on Tuesday’s at 11:00 a.m. now through June! You must be 55+ and a Corolla resident a minimum of 6 months of the year. If you are interested in signing up or being placed on an alternate list, please call the Currituck County Senior Center at 252-232-3505. Walk-Ins are NOT allowed.

“Black Cloud Rising” – at 10:30 a.m.. English Professor David Wright Falade will join the museum to virtually discuss his book that focuses on Richard Etheridge’s time as a solider in the Union Army’s so called African Brigade.

Monday, March 6, 2023 – IN-HOUSE MOVIE – “Loves Enduring Promise”
at 12:00 p.m.! This is the 2nd movie in a series based off Janette Oaks best selling books.

Wednesday, March 8, 2023 – PRESENTATION – Microgreens
with Chris & Sheila from Cooperative Extension at 12:30 p.m.. Microgreens are nutrient-dense tiny greens that may be grown in a relatively short time and in limited space. Given the variety of species that you can grow and their high nutritional value, microgreens have the potential to provide you with nutrient-dense greens, and the de-stressing experience of working in your home garden.

Wednesday, March 15, 2023 – TRIP – Museum of the Albemarle Lunch & Learn
“History of St. Patrick’s Day” at 11:15 a.m. Local Historian Robert Waters will provide history of Celtic & traditional Irish selections played on such instruments as the banjo, button accordion, autoharp, folk & spoons. Enjoy a mixture of pub songs, ballads & more!
Cost: money for lunch at Highway 55.

Cooking with Latesa…
Eggs Benedict Bake with Bearnaise Sauce
Ingredients:
- 3/4 pound Canadian bacon
- 6 croissants, cut into 1/2 inch cubes
- 10 large eggs
- 2 cups 2%milk
- 3 green onions, chopped
- 1 tsp onion powder
- 1 teaspoon ground mustard
- 1 teaspoon dried tarragon
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon white pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 1 envelope bearnaise sauce
Directions:
- Place half Canadian bacon in a greased 9×13 baking dish.
- Layer with croissants & remaining bacon.
- In a large bowl, whisk eggs, milk, green onions, onion powder, mustard, tarragon, salt & pepper until blended; pour over top.
- Sprinkle with paprika.
- Refrigerate, covered, several hours or overnight.
- Preheat oven to 375 degrees.
- Remove casserole from refrigerator while oven heats.
- Bake, covered for 30 minutes.
- Uncover & bake additional 15-20 minutes or until knife inserted in center comes out clean.
- Let stand 5-10 minutes.
- Prepare sauce according to package directions. Serve with casserole.
