May 2023 Senior Center
Daily Happenings

The Currituck County Senior Centers; Barco, Knotts Island and Powells Point are places designed to give Senior Adults in Currituck the opportunity to meet other seniors, receive services geared towards seniors and participate in activities that will affirm their dignity and self-worth.

With that in mind each month the staff produces a newsletter to inform citizens of available programs for that month. Please take the time to read what the Senior Centers are doing this month.

When we all work together the senior centers are an “enjoyable and a happy place” for EVERYONE!

Memorial Day Facts…
A Different Name

It was initially known as Decoration Day. The name refers to the tradition of adding ornaments to the final resting place of fallen soldiers. People lay flags and flowers in national  cemeteries.

After the Second World War, Federal law made an official change to Memorial Day in 1967.

The Holiday Founder

General John A. Logan was one of the most vocal advocates of solemn remembrance. He was the commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic. He fought for the Union during the Civil War.

Few and Far Between

As of 2023, the United States only recognizes eleven federal holidays. Memorial Day is one of them, highlighting its importance for the country and its identity.
