October 2023 Senior Center
Daily Happenings

The Currituck County Senior Centers; Barco, Knotts Island and Powells Point are places designed to give Senior Adults in Currituck the opportunity to meet other seniors, receive services geared towards seniors and participate in activities that will affirm their dignity and self-worth.

With that in mind each month the staff produces a newsletter to inform citizens of available programs for that month. Please take the time to read what the Senior Centers are doing this month.

When we all work together the senior centers are an “enjoyable and a happy place” for EVERYONE!

Did You Know…
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

It aims to promote screening and prevention of the disease, which affects one in eight women in the United States every year and 2.3 million women worldwide.

Breast Cancer Awareness Month - OctoberBreast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer among American women. Black women are most likely to die from breast cancer than women of any other racial or ethnic group.

About 85% of breast cancers occur in women who have no family history of breast cancer. These occur due to genetic mutations that happen as a result of the aging process and life in general, rather than inherited mutations.

Regular breast self-exams, an annual exam by your doctor, and yearly mammograms are important tools in breast cancer detection – especially early detection, when cancers may be more treatable.
