Resources for Citizens & Businesses

The following resources are available to help citizens and businesses cope with the COVID-19 pandemic:

COVID-19 Call Center  Albemarle Regional Health Services’ hotline for information and health resources, 252-338-9355.

Currituck Library  Online offerings at http://library.earlibrary.org/currituck/ that include books and activities for children.

  • Cloud Library – Allows you to borrow and read eBooks from your local public library for free.
  • Tumble Books – has over 1,100 titles for grades K-6, and includes unique animated, talking picture books, read-along chapter books, National Geographic videos, non-fiction books, playlists, as well as books in Spanish and French.
  • Teen Book Cloud – Features over 1,000 titles, including student-favorite Graphic Novels, enhanced e-books with full audio narration and highlighted text, classic literature, national geographic videos, and more!

  • Resources for Reopening – Safety guidelines for individuals, food service establishments, roadside markets, and employees.
  • Time Management for Working at Home – Tips to be productive for people now faced with working from home.
  • “Live from Extension” – Daily live video on YouTube at 11:30 a.m. Features a variety of topics and Cooperative Extension programs.
  • Youth and Family  Includes Facebook Live sessions and other activities for children and the family.
  • Food Safety  Information managing risk for individuals at home and for food environments such as restaurants, grocery stores, and farms.

Internet Service  The N.C. Department of Information Technology has an Interactive Map to help North Carolina residents find free and low-cost internet and mobile service offerings in their area.

NC Health and Human Services  Emergency Resources & Benefits includes several ways to apply for assistance and find more information on benefits for you and your family.

Legal Aid of NC   Call 866-219-5262 or visit www.legalaidnc.org.  People who have lost income and cannot pay rent may apply for the organization’s eviction diversion program, in which a lawyer will help negotiate a rent payment plan with the landlord or property manager.

HUD  U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development offers several programs that can help homeowners with Avoiding Foreclosure.

WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) program offered by Albemarle Regional Health Services. Full services are being provided without participants having to visit the office. Call the Currituck Health Department for more info at 252-232-2271.

United Way Database  NC 2-1-1 is a free information and referral service provided by United Way of North Carolina that is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Its database includes thousands of non-profit and government agencies that can provide a wide range of aid to families. These include food and healthcare services during emergencies.

Child Care for Essential Personnel  If you are a parent who provides necessary services to, or cares for, members of our communities and your child care has fallen through or is unavailable because of COVID-19 closures, call 1-888-600-1685 to be connected with the right fit for you and your child. At this time, representatives are available to assist you on weekdays between 8 a.m. – 5 p.m. Options are available for infants up to children age 12.

Food Assistance  Families who need food assistance can text FOODNC to 877-877 to find free meal sites near them.

Food Bank  The Food Bank of the Albemarle, based in Elizabeth City, 252-335-4035.

Food & Essentials Delivery  Senior citizens and others at high risk for COVID-19 can request delivery of meals, medicines, pet supplies, and more at Corona Community. Citizens may also volunteer to help in their area.

Online Support Groups  Integrated Family Services offers free weekly Support Group Meetings for teens and adults who may be struggling to cope with changes caused by the pandemic. These meetings are done online via the Zoom Meeting app.

Mental Health Support  The Hope4NC Helpline, 1-855-587-3463, connects North Carolina residents to additional mental health resources that help them cope and build resilience during times of crisis.  It is available 24/7 when you need help.

National Helpline  The National Disaster Distress Helpline offers crisis counseling and emotional support 24/7 during the COVID-19 outbreak. Call 1-800-985-5990.

Public Assistance Hotline  A COVID-19 Public Assistance Hotline has been setup for potential Stafford Act applicants.  Applicants are encouraged to call 919-825-2548 to get questions answered.

Virtual Appointments  Telehealth is the use of technology for health care appointments and services. It allows you to “see”
your doctor without having to go to the doctor’s office and is a benefit covered by Medicaid.

United Way  The Albemarle Area United Way, 252-333-1510

Albemarle Hopeline  Albemarle Hopeline is a domestic and sexual violence agency serving six area counties, including Currituck. Hopeline’s 24 hour Crisis Line is 252-338-3011.

Mobile Crisis Team  The Integrated Family Services Mobile Crisis Team serves Currituck County on a 24/7 basis. Crisis intervention services are provided at any location in the community to help people in a crisis with mental health issues, developmental disabilities, and substance abuse issues. 1-866-437-1821.

Quit Smoking and Vaping   QuitlineNC offers help to quit smoking and vaping, which can increase your risk for severe illness during COVID-19. QuitlineNC has a 24/7 toll-free service available at 1-800-QUIT-NOW (1-800-784-8669); Spanish: 1-855-Dejelo-Ya (1-855-335-3569); and TTY: 1-877-777-6543.

Phase 2 for Restaurants  NCDHHS provides Guidance-for-Restaurants as North Carolina begins Phase 2 on May 22.

Business Training  Count on Me NC is a program to help businesses learn how to operate within safety guidelines as North Carolina reopens.

US Chamber of Commerce  Website, Information for small businesses, including “How to Get a Paycheck Protection Program Loan” through the CARES Act.

  • Town Hall video explaining what the federal stimulus package means for small businesses, and various loan programs available.

Small Business Loans  Business owners may apply online for a Disaster Loan Assistance from the U.S. Small Business Association.

Business Rapid Recovery  The NC COVID-19 Rapid Recovery Lending Program supports small businesses and family farms as they recover from the economic impact of COVID-19. A Rapid Recovery Loan bridges the gap between when the crisis strikes and when federal loans, insurance payouts, and other relief funds are approved.

Small Business Center  The Small Business and Technology Development Center can provide assistance and resources to local businesses by phone or virtual meetings. For businesses in Moyock and Central Currituck, call 252-339-2896; for businesses in Lower Currituck and Corolla, call 252-489-6299.

Unemployment Information  Anyone who needs to file for unemployment insurance may do so online with the NC Department of Commerce, Division of Employment Security. You may also call the customer care center at 1-888-737-0259.

Unemployment Eligibility & Benefits  The Northeastern Development Workforce Board has information to answer questions about unemployment eligibility, benefits, and how to apply.  This video has information that will help individuals and businesses deal with the layoff of employees.

Unemployment Assistance  Independent contractors and self-employed workers out of work because of COVID-19 can apply for federal Pandemic Unemployment Assistance.

Restaurant & Hotel Staff  NC Restaurant Workers Relief Fund  Hospitality employees of restaurants or hotels facing financial hardship, layoff, or reduced hours may apply for a grant of up to $500.

NC Works  As of March 20, 2020, the NCWorks Career Centers in Edenton (252-482-2195), Elizabeth City (252-331-4798), and Dare County (252-480-3500) will be closed until further notice. Each will continue to assist customers through phone and email.

Farming Resources  COVID-19 Farming Resources provided by NC Cooperative Extension, including food safety, staff management, supply chain, financial help, alternative sales, and more.

Flood Insurance  FEMA has extended the grace period by 120 days for renewing policies under the National Flood Insurance Program. If you have questions, contact your insurance agent.

Water Quality  Water held unused in building pipes while facilities are shut down becomes stagnant and conditions may develop that increase the risk for waterborne bacteria. Follow these guidelines for Reactivating Plumbing Systems from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
