Household hazardous waste collection in April

Currituck County residents and property owners may safely dispose of paint, pesticides, fertilizers, and other dangerous materials at the annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event on Saturday, April 13, 2024.

The Public Works Department, in partnership with EcoFlow, Inc., will provide a safe method for citizens to dispose of unwanted hazardous materials. Along with the hazardous waste collection, a shred truck will be on site for paper document disposal. In addition, the Sheriff’s Office will collect unused prescription medicines.

This special event is free for all county residents and property owners. It will be held from 10:00 am – 2:00 pm at two collection sites:

  • Currituck County Public Safety Center, 125 Community Way, Barco, off of Highway 158 (Shortcut Rd.)
  • Southern Outer Banks Water Plant, 734 Ocean Trail, Corolla

Examples of Accepted Items:

  • Aerosols, antifreeze, household batteries, fire extinguishers, propane tanks, alkaline and acidic cleaners, pool cleaners, fertilizers, pesticides, insecticides, caulk, mercury, thermostats, florescent light tubes, adhesives, wood fillers, paint thinners, and oil-based paints.

Unacceptable Items include the following:

  • Latex paint, commercial waste, explosives, ammunition, radioactive material, smoke detectors, asbestos, biohazardous waste, syringes, or needles.

EcoFlow, Inc. reserves the right to refuse any waste deemed unsafe to handle or unsuitable for collection.
