Commission-Manager Form of Government

Currituck County operates under a Commission-Manager form of local government. Elected officials — Board of Commissioners — are the community leaders and policy makers who establish a vision for the county. In 2008, Currituck County transitioned from a five-member Board of Commissioners to a seven-member board. The Board of Commissioners employs a County Manager to carry out policy and ensure that all residents are being equitably served.

The County Manager serves as local government’s chief executive officer and coordinates the work of department heads and other employees. An excellent county staff helps to ensure the smooth and efficient delivery of services.

Currituck’s County Manager is also responsible for leading budget preparation, directing day-to-day operations, hiring and firing personnel, and serving as the Commission’s chief policy advisor.
