Are you new to the area and hoping to start a garden? Maybe you’ve been here your whole life, but don’t have a “green thumb”? Or maybe you’re a seasoned gardener, but are looking to pick up a new trick or two? Regardless of your situation N.C. Cooperative Extension, Currituck County Center has the series for you! Starting this April, we are offering a 3-part Vegetable Gardening Series.
All classes will take place at the Currituck County Extension Office, in Barco from 10:00 a.m. to Noon. There is a $15.00 fee for each class, but with that cost comes materials to start your garden, to help it grow, and to help protect it from pests. April 5, 2022 – Part I – Garden Preparation
Where we’ll learn what it takes to get our gardens off to a strong start. We’ll cover:
- site selection and preparation,
- planting dates,
- and variety selection.
With this class fee, you’ll take home seeds and transplants to start your own summer garden. Sign up by the first of March to help us decide which seeds and transplants we’ll provide and cover in the class.
April 19, 2022 – Part II – Fertility and Troubleshooting
If you’ve ever dealt with:
- blossom end rot,
- had bushy tomatoes,
- or had poor seed emergence,
this is the class for you! We’ll cover some of the common issues gardeners face in our area related to nutrient deficiencies and garden maintenance.
May 3, 2022 – Part III – Pests and Diseases
We’ll cover everything that’s out there trying to eat your vegetables before you do! More specifically, we will cover:
- common insect pests and diseases,
- how to control them,
- and some beneficial insects to be on the lookout for.
The fee for this course will cover the cost of a native, beneficial control option to defend your garden!
We are accepting cash and check payments in addition to paying via credit card through Eventbrite. Please, make checks payable to NCSU. Checks and cash payments can be received at the Currituck Extension Office located at 120 Community Way Barco NC 27917, within 5 days of registration.
Class size is limited and full registration, including payment, is required to hold your spot. If you have any problems registering please feel free to call us at 252-232-2261, and we will walk you through the process.
Currently, masks are not required for indoor in-person classes but are encouraged for all individuals. Please be aware this could change in light of changing state or local COVID-19 mandates.
